About Us

Howdy,

We’re just 4 guys biking across the U.S. during the Summer of 2009. We call ourselves The Tumbleweeds. Several years ago the Tumbleweeds biked from Jackson, WY to San Francisco, CA. Despite long days in the saddle, brutal headwinds, and the effects of too many post-ride beers we found the experience intensely rewarding and insightful. We always dreamed of taking a longer trip and five years later we’re making that dream come true.

We’re riding to raise money and awareness for a charity called Project Rwanda because we believe in what they do. You can find more information about donating to Project Rwanda on the ‘Donate’ page.

We plan to go from Newport, OR to Cape Cod, MA, making stops in Jackson, WY, Iowa City, IA, and your house (if you’ll have us) along the way. Please visit our ‘Route’ page for more information.

We’ll be blogging from the road so please follow us on this site, Facebook, or Twitter.

Know The Tumbleweeds:

Ben

Ben, a TV fell on his head

Ben, a TV fell on his head

Ben’s Positive Ape Index (API) is both impressive and disgusting. A native of Alabama, Ben attended Davidson College where he quickly became friends with his fellow Tumbleweeds. After graduating in 2003 he headed out to Jackson Hole with Dan and John, and later shared a room with Ryan. He currently lives and works in DC as a real estate consultant but is headed to Austin, TX to eat all the Tex-Mex he can handle. Out on the road he’ll really miss long video chats with his girlfriend and sanctimoniously riding his fixie around D.C.’s many gentrified neighborhoods. He likes to talk, hates tents, attacks on hills, and has regular emotional breakdowns when facing a headwind.

Ryan

Ryan, arguably the sexiest Tumbleweed

Ryan, arguably the sexiest Tumbleweed

A romantic at heart, Ryan already loves you. He has cultivated the “cute and scruffy” look in order to compliment his impressive resume; formerly a Teach for America volunteer in Chicago and ski school instructor in Jackson, Ryan is currently a Boston-based PhD candidate in something no one will ever understand. Out on the road he’ll really miss reorganizing his iTunes collection and wearing ripped-up jeans. He likes to trim his beard, collect items adorned with skulls, and ride his bike everyday, but he hates technology.

Dan

Dan, bonafied prospects

Dan, bonafied prospects

Dan is the best basketball player to ever come out of Northfield, VT, but don’t let his raw athleticism fool you. A graduate of Davidson College, Yale University, and currently a PhD candidate at Iowa University, Dan can meet any intellectual challenge in his chosen field, American Religious History. While riding across the great USA Dan will really miss his fiancée and the fields of Iowa. He likes to grow impressive facial hair, perform marriage ceremonies, dance, and he hates zero. When a McDonalds is within site Dan is the best sprinter in the world, it’s a proven fact.

John

John, skinny

John, skinny

Originally from D.C., all 120 pounds of John is a traveler. Davidson College, Jackson Hole, Ethiopia, Chile, the Bahamas; there is nowhere he won’t go to find a decent tweed sportcoat. Currently working in marketing and business development for a D.C. consulting company, John is headed to business school in the fall.  While biking cross country John will miss a lazy cup of coffee from down the street and his rowdy neices and nephews.  He loves airplanes and tennis, but hates showering and gaining weight.

I just want you to know that, as the original owner of the tweed sportcoat shown in John’s picture, it was the result of an arduous, tenacious and long search for the finest and best looking tweed coat on earth. It was found in County Donegal in Ireland. Whether it is the ideal garment for cross country biking is of no interest to me. I only want to defend with ferocity the reputation of the sheep of Donegal.

This website officially makes me the old man re-livin’ the glory days.

I wish you all the best of luck. And while you may have plans when you reach Boston, dinner’s on me in the North End if you want it.

All the best food, all the best stories, all the best fun for the Kings of the Road!

    Hi Ryan and Franklin,

Good for you for getting involved in this worthwhile cause! The Sollitt Family, (Shannon, Henry, Emma) now resides in Chicago, and know that your team has a place to rest, or at the very least, a home cooked meal, if needed, when you pass through this city. Good luck on your journey and be safe! Enjoy your stop in JACKSON!

John and Ben, I am proud of you guys. I remember the first time we met – before the Four Seasons JH opened. Sorry I will not be in JH to greet you. I moved to Aspen a couple of years ago to work for Aspen Skiing Company. Best of luck on your journey. All for the right reasons. Best regards.

Ben, check out Gueros when you are in Austin. Just south of downtown.

    Hi guys,

Ryan, while it says you hate technology, sorry bud but this note is for you. Kelly here, Kelly who your thinking? Right? I worked in rough riders this winter in Jackson, friends with the crazy tom, e rock Eric and the cool bus crowd. Long black braids, tall. How are ya?

What you guys are doing is great and as a big road biker myself I really am slighlty jealous. But with that aside, I work in marketing and fundraising for a London based non profit called Network 4 Africa. It was started by a BBC reporter named Rebecca Tinsely. The non profit corrdinates and works with local communities in Rwanda, Chad, and Uganda to bring over psycho- therapy therapist to train women in the community to become therapist and begin to assist other to process and cope with the horrors they experienced and witnessed during the genocide.

So not sure if this is a long shot but I think it would be great to get your guys story on the website or at least try and have the non profit throw you guys some support. Or any other idea’s you may have I’m open to. The foundation is highly recognized and probably already linked to NGO you all are raising money for.

Enough said, let me know if this interests you or not.

Hope to see ya when you ride through Jackson after the pass climb.

Good luck, drink a %?.@! Ton of water.

Hi Dan: I taught with your mom at Spaulding. Great project you have going there. I’d like to do it myself someday. I sympathize with your hatred of zero. They got through 2000 years of mathematics without it. What’s the big deal? Have you read George Seife’s “Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea”? I think you’d like it.

    Good luck,
    Jerry Desmarais

Hey guys! Congratulations on making it to the East coast! I came across your site by chance while looking up advice on bike touring. I’m trying to plan a fundraising bike trip from CT to Washington, DC and wanted to ask for some advice. I know you’re probably really busy, but if you get a moment would you mind e-mailing me at nldaddona@gmail.com. I’d love to chat about ideas and any tips you might have.

    Thanks guys!!
